On Friday, the Roswell Coyotes shut out the Highland Hornets 42-0 at the Wool Bowl. The Coyotes entered the playoffs as the first seed after finishing the regular season 8-1 and winning the district title by going 6-1 in those matchups. They had a first-round bye to start the playoffs.

The Hornets entered the playoffs as the ninth seed after a 6-4 finish to the regular season and finishing third in their district by going 5-2 in those games. In the first round, the Hornets defeated Miyamura 20-12. The second-round match between the Coyotes and the Hornets is this year's first matchup between the teams.

It took a bit for one of the offenses to get going for the first quarter, but at 4:35, the Coyotes would strike first. Their quarterback, Jacob Palomino (10), would throw a 30-plus yard pass to Kolby Sanchez (4) for the first touchdown of the game. After that point, the Coyotes would take control of the game.

Their defense would make another stop, and the Coyotes would score another touchdown courtesy of Abey Toscano (25). The first would end with Roswell leading 14-0. The second would start with a huge punt return by the Coyotes’ Matt Castillo (3) that put them at the 3-yard line.

Toscano would make quick work, rushing into the end zone for his second touchdown of the game. The Coyotes’ defense would make another stop, and they would score on their following drive with a rushing touchdown by Palomino. After that score, both defenses would hold each offense to zero points, ending the half with a tally of 28-0 in favor of the Coyotes.

The Coyotes got the ball to start the third quarter and scored again. This time, it was an 18-yard pass by Palomino to Olin Ingram (20) for another touchdown. The Hornets would fumble on the kickoff, gifting the Coyotes excellent field position.

By this time, most of the backup players for the Coyotes are in, including backup quarterback Luke Lynn (17). Lynn would lead the Coyotes on to score again, with him being the one to score the touchdown. After this, the clock would run continually due to the Coyotes' colossal lead.

The third quarter would end with the Coyotes up 42-0. Due to the running clock, the fourth quarter went by quickly. No points were scored this quarter, with the only significant plays being an 81-yard punt by the Coyotes’ do-it-all player Xai Carrasco (16) and an interception by Kyle Williams (28).

The game ended with the Coyotes on top, with a score of 42-0. Coyotes Head Coach Jeff Lynn described the play of this team in the game. He was more than pleased with his special teams because they had excellent kick coverage, forced turnovers, and did not allow the Hornets to have a great field position.

They also had big returns when the Coyotes got the ball kicked to them. Lynn said the defense was spectacular. For most of the game, when the starters were in, they held one of New Mexico’s leading rushers to minimal gains.

As for the offense, Lynn said there are still some things to work on. They fumbled the ball a couple of times, and they committed multiple penalties. That is stuff that can and will hurt them as the playoffs continue.

The Coyotes will play the Gadsden Panthers in the Class 5A semifinals. Gadsden defeated Los Alamos on Saturday in a quarterfinal game, 43-14. According to MaxPreps, the game is scheduled for 1 p.

m. next Saturday at the Wool Bowl. Best trending stories from the week.
