Ross Ross, the stage name of William Lennan, has established himself as one of Papua New Guinea’s finest lead guitarists, with a journey that reflects both his musical passion and commitment to uplifting PNG’s local music scene. Raised by his aunt in Imau village, Lennan’s roots are a unique mix of New Ireland and East New Britain, with his musical inspiration stemming from the renowned Yalakua village in Kokopo District. Growing up alongside the legacy of PNG’s legendary artists, including Sir George Telek and Leonard Kania, Ross Ross absorbed the sounds and rhythms that have fuelled his lifelong dedication to music.
Ross Ross’s introduction to music was a family affair; his father’s brother, William Simon, was a celebrated lead guitarist for Junior Molax Band, where Junior Kopex led the vocals. Inspired by this close exposure, Ross began his journey with the bass guitar, eventually mastering the lead guitar. His first live performance was at Lae’s Yacht Club, where he had the honour of sharing the stage with Sir George Telek and Junior Kopex.
This marked the beginning of a storied career that would see him playing with prominent bands like Kivon, Raiwat, and performing alongside Nathan Nakikus from 2013 to 2015. In 2015, Ross Ross’s career reached new heights when he contributed to Tavin Tune’s hit album, touring PNG and solidifying his name as one of the country’s most sought-after guitarists. His success continued as he co-founded STAH Band (Slave to the Habit), collaborating with prominent artist Saii Kay.
Reflecting on this period, he expressed gratitude to Saii Kay for the trust and exposure, which helped him gain nationwide recognition. From Highlands to New Guinea Island, Ross Ross has performed with and earned the respect of PNG’s music giants, including Gedix Atenge, Felix Yausi, John Naiko, Easter Pacifica, and Ragga Siai. Under the guidance of respected producer Toxic Mahn, he recorded with EMK Crew from 2021 to 2022.
His musical journey took a transformative turn when he joined the band of Pati Potts Doi, the “King of Pacific Music.” Through this collaboration, Ross says he has gained a deeper understanding of discipline and music ethics, describing the experience as a “masterpiece art of music.” Now playing alongside Pati Potts Doi, Ross Ross advises aspiring musicians: “It’s not about your aptitude, but it’s all about your attitude to meet the altitude.
” Known for his humility and respectful approach, he maintains strong relationships across PNG’s music community, a quality that consistently lands him new gigs with top artists. Ross Ross also draws inspiration from John Warabat, another legendary PNG guitarist, whose influence is woven into his own musical path. His journey highlights not only the importance of skill but also the continue impact of character in an industry where talent and attitude must work hand in hand.
