Roses are tough cookies that can flourish with minimal attention. Nevertheless, gardening expert at Peter Beales Garden Centre suggest that if you're after the most spectacular show of roses and peak plant health, they need a bit more TLC than your garden-variety shrub, especially during spring. They let slip some top rose care advice for the season, underscoring the need to fertilize post-winter for best results.

Whether you're pro organic or lean towards chemicals for plant care, equipping your roses with essential nutrients is a breeze. Opting for a quality rose feed with the right nutrient mix and sticking to regular application is key. On this, the experts advised: "As your established roses come out of their dormant state they will spring into life with beautiful blooms if you apply a good fertiliser like Fish, Blood and Bone, or Vitax Q4.

" "This feed will give your roses an extra boost of essential trace elements and nutrients, which encourages top growth and beautiful blooms." Before fertilizing, it's essential to suit up with gloves, clear any weeds, spent leaves, or debris from around your rose bushes with a hand fork, reports the Express . Then scatter the recommended amount of fertiliser at the base of the plant as per the packet's instructions.

Distribute the feed evenly around the base matching the span of its canopy and afterward, gently mix the rose chow into the surrounding soil with the fork. If your garden's looking parched, it's time to quench your rose's thirst. But remember, after giving your rose a good feed, don't skip out on piling up the mulch.

Throwing down a protective blanket around your roses roots "isn't just busy work it's garden gold". The green-thumbed gurus over at David Austin explained that mulching "helps your roses to retain moisture, suppresses weeds and provides valuable nutrients for your roses as they grow". Roses should have previously been mulched in the autumn period to prepare them for winter.
