The Citizen invited Ottawa candidates from the four main parties to write a short article explaining what they will do for their local riding if elected. Some chose to participate; others did not. Today, Ottawa Centre Green party candidate Amanda Rosenstock: It is an honour to be your Green Party of Canada candidate in Ottawa Centre.
This is my second time running for the Greens. I am committed to building a more sustainable future for Ottawa Centre and Canada, as the traditional parties have not presented Canadians with a compelling vision that positions our country as a leader in the global energy transition, urban innovation and social justice. While the threat of tariffs is top of mind for most Canadians heading into this election, I repeatedly hear from residents at the door and on the street about the poor state of public transit, lack of affordable homes and difficulty accessing health care.
I share many of the same frustrations, and if elected MP, I will be a strong voice for the residents of Ottawa Centre who want to see urgent action on those issues. Reliable Transit As I do not have a car, I have struggled with the unreliable public transit system to get to work and out on weekends. This experience led me to work with local transit advocates in Ottawa to demand better public transit for the residents of our city.
As your MP, I would prioritize working across party lines to ensure that federal funding for transit gives municipalities such as Ottawa the flexibility to use funds for the day-to-day operations and maintenance expenses that are essential to improving the reliability of our system. I would also push to ensure that federal funding for transit requires municipalities to report on their plans to increase annual ridership. Affordable Housing I have also experienced firsthand how difficult it is to find an affordable home in central Ottawa.
Building more “missing middle” housing is key to increasing opportunities for affordable ownership in the urban core. The missing middle are housing units between single-family detached homes and large apartment buildings. As your MP, I would immediately work to incentivize developments with larger unit sizes — townhouses, row houses, and multiplexes — and rent-to-own models so that more young professionals can build equity without having to flock to the suburbs.
Accessible health care It is unacceptable to me that more than 165,000 Ottawans, including my mother-in-law, do not have access to a primary care provider. As your MP, I would collaborate with other parties to expand student loan forgiveness for doctors and nurses to attract more providers to the city and to help them stay. I would also push to modernize the Canada Health Act to ensure that services covered under provincial health insurance plans include those provided by nurse practitioners and mental health specialists.
I believe that with the right candidate and with the right priorities, a Green can win in Ottawa Centre in the next two to three elections. In Ottawa Centre, the future is Green. We can build it together.
