Bryson DeChambeau revealed Rory McIlroy didn't speak to him all Sunday during their final round at the Masters . The final pairing shared 18 holes together during a rollercoaster round of golf which ended with the Northern Irishman winning the Green Jacket via playoff against Justin Rose. DeChambeau came from two shots behind to go ahead after the second hole.
But his lead ended there. Bogeys at three and four let McIlroy get back in but DeChambeau couldn't get his iron play right. A double at 11 and a bogey at 12 killed his round.
It was too much damage . Even with birdies at 14 and 16, Justin Rose had already submitted his card to close on 11-under and was out of reach. DeChambeau was on the green when McIlroy, on 12-under after a fine birdie on 17, bogeyed the last and meant a playoff was needed to crown this year's Masters winner.
Both players walked off the green and into the scoring cabin but they still didn't talk. Mirror Sports US asked DeChambeau if he spoke to McIlroy after the round and how he was feeling, but the American gave an abrupt answer in return. "No idea," he said.
"Didn't talk to me once all day." When asked if DeChambeau attempted to initiate conversation at all throughout the round, he responded: "He wouldn't talk to me." DeChambeau also said he wanted to grieve for McIlroy after he went into Rae's Creek on 13.
The Ulsterman attempted to play conservatively by laying up and it didn't pay off. "I wanted to cry for him," said DeChambeau. "I mean, as a professional, you just know to hit it in the middle of the green, and I can't believe he went for it, or must have just flared it.
"But I've hit bad shots in my career, too, and it happens. When you're trying to win a major championship, especially out here, Sunday of Augusta, the Masters, you have to just do it and get the job done and do it right. There were times where it looked like he had full control and at times where it's like, what's going on.
Kind of looked like one of my rounds, actually." Describing his emotions after the second, DeChambeau said he felt in full control but said the third green cost him massively. "What's crazy is the third hole," DeChambeau vented.
"Hit it up there to 20 feet, I'm like, okay, that's exactly the way I wanted to play the hole, and that putt, I've never seen a putt faster than that. Those greens got really fast. The agronomists here at Augusta National and the Masters, they know how to play complete tricks on you.
"I thought for no valid reason it went nine feet by. There's no way that putt goes that far by. I just didn't realize how firm and fast it could get out here.
It's great experience. Won't let that happen again.".
