Rory McIlroy's showing in the waning holes of Round 1 at The Masters left much to be desired, with a mistake on branded "inexcusable" by some fans sparking a nightmare three-hole spell under the pressure of trying to complete a career grand slam. Coming into Hole 15, McIlroy, supported this week at Augusta by wife Erica Stoll , was playing exceptional golf, shooting four under - good enough to be tied with Scottie Scheffler and Corey Conners for T2 - and just three shots behind Justin Rose, the leader. The Northern Irishman saw his long iron approach shot head through the back of the green, seemingly giving himself a good opportunity for an up-and-down for birdie.
Instead, McIlroy overhit his chip and could only watch as his ball slowly made its way past the hole and fell into the water behind. Upon seeing McIlroy's mistake, fans took to social media to express their disbelief at seeing the star's shot end up in the water. "Absolutely zero chance Rory McIlroy just did that.
Inexcusable," one fan wrote on X after McIlroy's issues on the 15th hole, leading to a double bogey. Another fan noted that the 35-year-old could have been the subject of bad luck from the commentators, who lauded McIlroy's skills. "Second time tonight Sky comms have jinxed [Shane] Lowry/McIlroy .
.. 'he's very good at these' .
.. and McIlroy rolls it into the water," the fan added.
A fan explained that watching McIlroy at The Masters is testing their patience, especially with his inconsistency. "McIlroy can be so Infuriating - missing long on 15 and 17, then chip shots that completely got away from him. He went from 4th to 27th in about 20 minutes," the fan said on X.
Things went from bad to worse as his double bogey on 15 was followed by another double bogey two holes later on 17. The three-hole stretch dropped him from -4 to even par for the round, seven shots back of leader Rose. For McIlroy, this year's edition of The Masters was meant to be a more successful showing for the Northern Irishman.
Gary Player revealed that McIlroy recently met with Jack Nicklaus for advice on properly playing at Augusta in hopes of winning his first Masters . Looking for more to watch ? Tell me how you’re going to play the golf course.’ And we went through it shot-for-shot. He got done with the round, I didn’t open my mouth, and I said, ‘I wouldn’t change a thing.
That’s exactly the way I would try to play the golf course.’ “The discipline is what Rory has lacked, in my opinion. He’s got all the shots.
He’s got all the game. He’s certainly as talented as anybody in the game. But if you go back in his history the last few years, he gets to a place a lot of times an eight or a seven pops up, and that keeps him from getting to where he needs to go.
I’m a big fan of Rory’s and I like Rory a lot.”.
