Rory McIlroy blasted by Masters fans after surprise snub following round one disaster at Augusta Rory McIlroy made a promising start but was undone by two double bogeys McIlroy ended the opening round on an even-par 72, seven shots off the lead He has been criticised on social media for his actions at end of the round By SPENCER MORGAN Published: 07:31 EDT, 11 April 2025 | Updated: 07:35 EDT, 11 April 2025 e-mail View comments Rory McIlroy was on the receiving end of criticism for his actions following what was another disappointing first round at the Masters . The Northern Irishman has never won the Green Jacket and needs to do so in order to complete a career Grand Slam. McIlroy turned a promising start into another pedestrian opening round at Augusta as two holes proved to be his undoing.

McIlroy was four under par and three shots behind leader Justin Rose when he made double bogey from the middle of the fairway on the par five 15th hole before adding another double two holes later. He ended the round on an even-par 72 that left him seven shots adrift of the lead. And he was in no mood to talk after what unfolded on the first day, electing to snub all interviews.

Rory McIlroy has been criticised for refusing to speak to the media following his first round Members of the media had gathered to hear his thoughts but McIlroy opted to make his way straight to the practice range. And the move hasn't gone down particularly well with golf fans on social media. 'Face off the tour not really acting like the face of the tour right now,' wrote one while another labelled him 'soft'.

'Pathetic and childish because of two bad holes,' another posted on X while one said 'this confirms why I never cared for this guy.' 'So wait,' another wrote. 'He wants to do plenty of interview during the good but none during the bad? I like Rory but he can't have it both ways.

' McIlroy was among the favourites going into the tournament with odds of 15/2 to finally win it. McIlroy was on course when he reached four under par with a two-putt birdie on the 13th, but missed from short range for another on the next and then ran up a double bogey on the 15th after chipping from over the green into the water at the front. That was precisely what six-time winner Jack Nicklaus had warned was keeping McIlroy from winning more major titles when he had revealed earlier that he had approved the Northern Irishman's plan to tackle Augusta National over lunch last week.

We went through it shot for shot, he got done with the round, I didn't open my mouth and I said 'I wouldn't change a thing,'' Nicklaus said in a press conference following the honorary starters ceremony. 'The discipline to do that is what Rory has lacked in my opinion. He's got all the shots, he's got all the game.

'He certainly is as talented as anybody in the game, but if you go back through his history in the last few years he gets to a place and all of a sudden a seven or an eight pops up and that keeps him from getting where he needs to go.' McIlroy also double-bogeyed the 17th after hitting his approach over the green and three-putting from 20 feet, but at least saved par on the 18th after a wayward drive.
