It’s safe to say the buzz over this year’s WrestleMania is only getting bigger.For better or worse, plenty of tongues are wagging over WWE’s biggest annual event which, this year, takes place over the two nights of April 19 and 20 in Las Vegas.WWEThough not currently a champion, Roman Reigns remains a key WWE figure[/caption]On screen, the stories and feuds of the good and bad of the WWE roster continue to bubble over and matches continue to be made.
Online, there remains as big a discourse as ever over WrestleMania, from the astronomical ticket pricing being faced by fans, to the satisfaction – or dissatisfaction – over the product being served up.There’s plenty of good. The story between Cody Rhodes and John Cena, who collide over the WWE Undisputed Championship in one night’s main event, continue to deliver compelling viewing.
Some shenanigans have left a section of fans unhappy, too – not least the decision to make the triple-threat match between Seth Rolins, Roman Reigns and CM Punk the main event of the other Mania night.The bout itself is sizable, of course, and features three of the company’s biggest names. In that sense, the lofty billing makes sense.
Others, however, point to the fact that the Royal Rumble winners each year are billed as having bagged ‘the main event of WrestleMania’ as a prize.Neither Charlotte Flair nor Jey Uso will claim that honour, despite winning their respective Rumbles to net Mania title matches of their own.While that fury has divided opinion online – some feeling Uso deserves that high billing and others feeling women have been slighted altogether in their position – one interesting fact has emerged from it all.
In confirming Reigns’ place in the main event of WrestleMania 41 – logic dictating that would be night one – WWE have allowed the Tribal Chief to shatter a sizable WrestleMania record.Up until recent years, WWE veteran Hulk Hogan had long held the accolade of main evening the most WrestleManias, having done so on eight occasion dating back more than 40 years to the first event in New York City in the mid-1980s.Reigns has now comfortably moved ahead of the Hulkster, his April clash technically his tenth WrestleMania main event.
Technically, because some might argue that his headlining both nights of WrestleMania 40 in 2024 represents a single WrestleMania rather than two.Roman Reigns has been at the top of the WWE WrestleMania mountain for some timeWWEEven the semantics of that aside, the former Shield member can, as an absolute, undisputed minimum, claim to have main evented nine separate WrestleMania events.The star’s stranglehold on the main event began a decade ago when his bout with Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania was hijacked by Money in the Bank holder Seth Rollins.
Subsequent main events for Reigns include the 2017 debacle against The Undertaker in Orlando, two more outings with Lesnar, and three involving Rhodes if you include 2023 and two in 2024.He’ll close the show – or at least one of them – in 2025, and a number of fans are in no doubt he’s where he deserves to be.One on X that the main event numbers were ‘actually insane’, adding: “He deserves it.
