Odds are subject to change. There is no love lost between Roma and Lazio. With just five scudetti between them, these two clubs are not exactly serial title-winners.

That only serves to increase the importance of the biannual Derby della Capitale. This will be the 184th official meeting between the pair. Roma have the edge with 68 wins, but Lazio have had the better of the fixture in recent times.

Indeed, three of the last five editions of the derby have ended with Lazio victorious, including in a Coppa Italia quarter-final 12 months ago. In that time Roma have triumphed on just one occasion. Lazio are also having a better season as we reach the midway point this weekend.

They are fourth in the Serie A standings, top of the Europa League and through to the last eight of the Coppa Italia. As for Roma, they are 10th in the Italian top flight and their participation in the Europa League beyond the league phase is far from guaranteed. They too are in the quarters of the Coppa.

This has been an extremely turbulent campaign so far for Roma. The owner Dan Friedkin, who recently completed a deal to buy Everton, made himself immensely unpopular with the vast majority of supporters by sacking club legend Daniele De Rossi in September. It is true that Roma had got off to a stuttering start to the season, but they only lost one of their first four games (the other three were draws) and the situation was patently retrievable.

Roma compounded the error by hiring Ivan Juric, who lasted in the job for less than two months before Claudio Ranieri, the returning hero, answered the Giallorossi ’s call once again. In truth, the Serie A season is already a write-off. Perhaps Roma can do something in the Europa League or the Coppa Italia, but they will not be involved in the race to finish in the top four domestically.

In the short term at least, Roma fans would settle for a derby-day victory over Lazio. After losing only one of their last six outings in all competitions, a degree of belief has returned to the camp. But a man of Ranieri’s experience knows better than most that the derby trumps all else.

Bragging rights are up for grabs as Roma host Lazio in one of Europe’s fiercest rivalries. Lazio came within minutes of beating Serie A leaders Atalanta last time out, only for a late Marco Brescianini equaliser to deny them the win. With just six points separating them from Atalanta, Marco Baroni’s side are in the title conversation as things stand, even if Inter and Napoli are also more fancied than the Biancocelesti.

With six wins and two draws in nine matches at the Stadio Olimpico, Baroni’s side are tough to beat at their own stadium. Roma may have defeated Lecce and Parma in December, but neither of those teams are in Lazio’s class.

The table does not lie. ⚽ Tip Lazio to win at 47/16 with SBK ⚽ Derby matches between Roma and Lazio are always absorbing affairs, but that does not mean the football is always of the highest quality. That is often what happens when the game means so much for the two sets of players, staff and supporters.

Each of the last five meetings between Roma and Lazio has featured under 2.5 goals. In fact, during that time there have been a grand total of four goals.

Ranieri has tightened up the Roma backline over the last few weeks. That was much needed after Juric’s tenure. Sunday’s showdown will probably follow the same pattern as recent editions of the Derby della Capitale.

⚽ Back under 2.5 goals at 10/11 with bet365 ⚽ Only Inter and Atalanta have scored more goals than Lazio this season. But unlike those two clubs, the latter do not have any players in double figures.

The closest to the 10-goal mark is Taty Castellanos, who has made the net ripple on seven occasions up to now. The forward only scored four times in 2023/24, so his goal tally alone shows the progress he has made this term. Castellanos is also Lazio’s designated penalty-taker, providing him with another potential route onto the scoresheet.

The Argentina international, who made his senior debut for his country in 2024, is the most likely scorer on Sunday. ⚽ Choose Taty Castellanos to score any time at 49/20 with BetMGM ⚽ Greg Lea Greg Lea is a freelance football writer from London.
