Read More After Salman Khan’s cameo as Chulbul Pandey in Singham Again, fans hoped for a collaboration between him and Rohit Shetty in the Cop Universe. However, Shetty has shifted focus to another project. The director is now preparing to bring the real-life story of former Mumbai Police Commissioner Rakesh Maria to the big screen.
Based on Maria’s autobiography Let Me Say It Now, the biopic will star John Abraham in the lead role. With a budget exceeding Rs 100 crore, the film will delve into Maria’s journey from a Bandra boy to a top cop, highlighting his significant role in protecting Mumbai and his deep connection to the city. An insider informed Mid Day, “Rohit always wanted to make a cop film rooted in truth.
Rakesh Maria’s life reads like a thriller. It’s intense and has many high points, from his investigation of the 1993 Bombay blasts and the 26/11 attacks to his brush with the underworld. Maria and Shetty have been in talks for a while, and it’s finally starting now.
With the autobiography serving as the blueprint, the film will trace the story of a Bandra boy becoming a cop, his relationship with Mumbai and how he played a crucial role in protecting the city that faced many attacks." “In the first schedule, Rohit will focus on Maria’s early days in the force. About 150 crew members will be on set, including action coordinators, prosthetics experts and a research team on standby.
A set depicting the Maharashtra ATS headquarters will also be erected," added the source. Insiders have also revealed that the upcoming Rakesh Maria biopic will be filmed at 40 iconic locations across Mumbai, including landmarks like Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, Dongri, and the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel. Rohit Shetty has fast-tracked the project, with shooting set to begin on April 18 at Esel Studio in Trombay.
The team is working with an ambitious four-month shooting schedule, aiming to complete a major portion of the film by the end of June if all goes as planned. Apart from handling the 1993 Bombay blasts and the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks, Rakesh Maria also led many other high-profile cases. These include the 2003 twin blasts in Mumbai, the shocking Neeraj Grover murder case, the Pune German Bakery blast, the 2011 Mumbai bombings and the Sheena Bora murder case.
