Robbie Williams has admitted that his joke about bedding most of the Spice Girls did not go down well with Posh Spice's husband, David Beckham. The ex- Take That singer had once joked about having intimate encounters with four out of the five members of the renowned girl band, a boast bound to turn heads. Robbie, who recently encountered football icon Beckham, who is married to Victoria, conceded that although he regretted the remark, he couldn't help but indulge in his typical playful banter, Edinburgh Live reports.
He shared: "I used to say on stage, 'Ladies and gentlemen, I feel very fortunate. I'm one of the only people on the planet that's been in Take That and four out of five of the Spice Girls'. It is a good line, but it upset all husbands and it's not true.
I'm sorry, but it's still funny." During a chat with SiriusXM, Robbie disclosed that he ran into David in New York last month and realised his quip was poorly received. He confessed: "I know he's heard that line, and I know he wasn't happy about it.
It destroys a bit of my soccer-loving soul because I adore him. So for me to think that I've upset him or offended him in any way, I feel bad. But I've got to do my jokes.
" Robbie, now wed to actress Ayda Field and father to four, has had reported flings with Spice Girls Mel B and Geri Horner in the past, though he played down these liaisons, remarking: "I dunno if dated is what I did." Williams previously revealed a joke about the Spice Girls is featured in his biopic, Better Man, but only after the film's director, Michael Gracey, convinced him to keep it in despite his initial reservations. Robbie wanted to show respect for the iconic girl group.
While David Beckham might not have seen the funny side, Robbie's wife Ayda has stood by him through thick and thin - even when he briefly ended things between them. The couple met in 2006 after being introduced by mutual friends, and Ayda felt an instant connection, as seen in Robbie's Netflix documentary. She said: "It was like the universe opened up".
Robbie added: "I had this moment where I felt as if I'd known her forever." However, the documentary also reveals the pair went through a tough time early in their relationship, including a brief separation. The four-part series gives an intimate look at Robbie's life, including his struggles with fame and addiction.
Ayda shared a difficult memory of when Robbie called her before his 33rd birthday to say he was going to rehab, saying: "It was my entry into addiction," as she recalled seeing Robbie use drugs for the first time. She shared: "You wouldn't notice his personality change but all of a sudden he would throw up watching TV," while Robbie confessed that at the height of his addiction struggles, he felt life wasn't worth living. He said: "There was a sense of.
.. It would be better if I passed away, I didn't care and it would be alright.
For me to change I'd need to be dying, die or stop what you're doing." Ayda went on to recount a heart-wrenching phone call: "I remember it was 2am and I called him and I was like, 'I am just getting on the highway' and he's like, 'Are you driving? Call me when you get home.' "And he is like, 'I can't be in a relationship, I have to get better and I can't be with you.
I have to break up with you.'" Ayda added: "And it was like, I understood it because I saw that he was unwell and I remember thinking, 'I just want you to get better. '" She also confessed to feeling "so crestfallen", saying: "He was my soulmate and then he was gone.
