Surat: Three people made an audacious attempt to loot a jewellery shop in the crowded market in Bhestan, but their plan was foiled when locals nabbed two of them trying to flee. However, the shop owner and his assistant were left grievously injured in the attack. The incident unfolded when the robbers entered the shop under the pretext of buying silver ornaments.
After examining items for about 15 minutes, two of them suddenly brandished sharp weapons and demanded the ornaments. When Shah and Gurjar resisted, the assailants attacked them and made off with the valuables. The commotion drew a crowd outside the shop.
One of the robbers, Amir Ansari, was apprehended on the spot by locals. The second suspect was later caught by the Detection of Crime Branch (DCB), while the third remains at large, said assistant commissioner of police (ACP), I division, NP Gohil. All three are residents of Limbayat, with Ansari running a hair-cutting salon and originally hailing from Uttar Pradesh.
Bhestan police inspector VL Patel said, "We have booked the accused under sections for robbery with an attempt to cause death or serious injury, as well as causing hurt during the robbery. Both injured victims are out of danger after receiving immediate medical attention at a private hospital. The exact details of the looted valuables will be confirmed once we record the victims' statements.
