Wrexham co-owner Rob McElhenney sung the praises of manager Phil Parkinson after they moved to the top of League One. McElhenney, who owns the Welsh outfit alongside fellow Hollywood star Ryan Reynolds , voiced his admiration following their storming start to the season which has seen them secure 13 points from five games - including Saturday's 3-0 victory over Shrewsbury Town. They dominated their cross-border rivals, with goals from Ollie Palmer, Elliot Lee, and Jack Marriott continuing their strong form.

Parkinson, appointed by McElhenney and Reynolds back in 2021, has transformed the club from non-league obscurity to third-tier prominence in just a couple of seasons. This led McElhenney to extol Parkinson's virtues publically, retweeting the post with the comment: "And it's all because of this man.

" He followed up with: "In Phil we trust." Despite his successful tenure, it hasn't been all smooth sailing for Parkinson, who previously managed sides including Bradford City, Charlton, Bolton, and Sunderland. His first season in charge saw a disappointing end as Wrexham were knocked out by Grimsby Town in the National League play-off semi-finals, but the progress since then cannot be overstated.

That disappointment stoked a fire which saw them clinch the title with a remarkable 111 points the following season. They completed consecutive promotions, marking their first return to League One since 2005, last season with automatic promotion from League Two. The new campaign kicked off with a thrilling 3-2 victory against Wycombe Wanderers at home, followed by a goalless draw at Bolton.

They've racked up three successive wins after that, overcoming Reading, Peterborough, and Shrewsbury without letting in a single goal. Co-owner McElhenney has made no secret of his admiration for manager Parkinson, tweeting earlier this year: "If we could bottle up and sell what Phil says to these players at half-time we'd be billionaires." He further added in a BBC Sport interview this summer: "It's been difficult every year, but, it's only going to get harder, harder, and harder.

The best we can do is invest in our manager Phil, and invest in the infrastructure of the town and team, and build up our youth academy. Hopefully give Phil the access to every player he wants and then give it a shot." Despite the stellar beginning to their season and the evident support from Wrexham's higher-ups, Parkinson keeps a level head.

After the Shrewsbury win, he modestly acknowledged, "It's a great start for us, it really is. "We're pleased but five games in now, we know it doesn't count for a great deal. But we have to be pleased with our work so far this season and now we take a deep breath.

"You could sense that in the build-up to the game, and I said to the players beforehand, there were a lot of people talking about the game everywhere you went. They were mentioning the rivalry. So it's a special feeling to win a derby game.

"It was a good win for us against a team that came into it off the back of a good win last week (over Leyton Orient). Today we should have scored more towards the end of the game, but we didn't, and 3-0 at home is a good solid win for us. It means a lot to our supporters.
