Chennai: Amid complaints of poor road repairs last year, Tambaram Corporation has begun relaying interior roads. Residents were calling for better quality control and urgent repairs before the onset of northeast monsoon . In areas like Hasthinapuram and Selaiyur, residents have been complaining about damaged roads for nearly three months.

Although repairs are being carried out in Hastinapuram, residents say the roads quickly became unfit for commuting due to substandard work. "Potholes reappeared on the Rajendra Prasad Road within weeks of repairs. Roads are often uneven," said Girija N Suresh from Hasthinapuram.

Some say roads near Aarthi Nagar leading to the Velachery-Tambaram Road are poorly levelled. "It's hard to ride my scooter on these roads, and it's causing pain in my neck and back," said Vasanth Jaikumar of Selaiyur. Selaiyur, Camp Road, Sembakkam, Vengaivasal, Mambakkam and Medavakkam are some of Chennai's fastest-growing suburbs.

"There's a surge in the construction of private apartments, which has attracted new residents seeking a peaceful suburban life. But poor road conditions and increasing traffic are making commuting difficult," said former director of municipal administration D Sivasamy. Residents are frustrated by the lack of coordination between authorities.

"Every time a road is laid, soon after, some other department comes to dig it up for pipeline work or other utilities. Many areas are yet to be merged with the corporation," said Priya Menon of Vengaivasal. On Friday, mayor Vasanthakumari K visited Sembakkam to inspect road conditions and oversee the construction of new tar roads.

"We are identifying damaged roads in all 70 wards. It is a priority to complete road construction and repairs before the monsoon," the mayor said. Chennai: Amid complaints of poor road repairs last year, Tambaram Corporation has begun relaying interior roads.
