[email protected] KINABALU: Upgrading works for the Sabah Heart Centre are expected to begin in September, said state Community Development and People's Well-being Minister Datuk James Ratib.

He said the project is now at the stage of preparing the Schedule of Accommodation (SOA) and Preliminaries Detailed Abstract (PDA), both of which are being drawn up by the Public Works Department."The department conducted a site visit to Queen Elizabeth Hospital II (HQEII) on Jan 22 and 23 to assess the project site and scope of works."Work is expected to begin in September as the PDA will be submitted to the department in May for final pricing," he said during the state legislative assembly's question-and-answer session.

He was responding to a query from Alias Sani (Warisan–Sekong) on updates regarding the Sabah Heart Centre, which was announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim in April last year.Anwar had said the federal government would allocate RM80 million for the facility, which will be known as the National Heart Centre Sabah and based at HQEII.The upgraded facility will include a heart specialist clinic, a non-invasive catheterisation laboratory, and an operating theatre.

There are currently three heart specialists and 120 nurses, with three more cardiologists to be added, Anwar had said."We are aware that heart-related cases in Sabah are increasing. That's why, during the prime minister's visit last year, we submitted a proposal to enhance cardiac services at HQEII," James added.
