Berkeley County Sheriff Duane Lewis announced the arrest of a man who was charged after an extensive investigation into assaults that occurred in the Cane Bay area of Berkeley County in November and December of 2023. Antjuan Xavier Reed, 24, has been charged with first-degree assault and battery, second-degree criminal sexual conduct with a minor, kidnapping and third-degree assault and battery. Lewis credited Berkeley County detectives for making Reed’s arrest possible.

According to a news release from the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office, the investigation included hours of undercover surveillance and reviewing forensic evidence. Detectives were assisted by the FBI’s field offices in Charleston, Columbia and Baltimore, Maryland, and the South Carolina State Law Enforcement Division (SLED). “I requested assistance from the FBI and SLED in order to identify the suspect from the assaults that occurred in Cane Bay last year,” Lewis said.

“Detectives have been working diligently to identify and locate the man responsible and to bring him to justice. I am very proud of the hard work that went into this case, which resulted in the offender being charged.” The assaults Reed was arrested for took place on Nov.

27, 2023, and Dec. 2, 2023. Reed is being held at the Hill-Finklea Detention Center without bond.
