A longevity expert has shared his top foods for preventing ageing, claiming that you may already have many in your kitchen. According to the doctor, these foods come with a number of benefits such as antioxidants to protect your DNA and vitamins that can boost your brain health. We are all well aware of the importance of eating a healthy, balanced diet.

Certain foods are known to lower our risk of health conditions, while others can raise them. And health bodies stipulate that we need a mix of fruits, vegetables, starchy foods, protein, fat, and dairy, or dairy alternatives to stay healthy. However, what we eat could also impact the rate at which our bodies age.

New York City-based physician Dr Michael Aziz shared 10 foods that could do just this. These are: Berries – Packed with antioxidants to protect DNA and slow cellular aging. Wild-caught fish – These are rich in omega-3 fatty acids which support brain health, reduce inflammation, and lower heart disease risk.

Eggs – He referred to these as a longevity staple loaded with brain-boosting B vitamins and healthy fats. Fermented foods - Fermented foods such as kimchi, yoghurt, and kefir can help strengthen gut health and immunity. Avocados and nuts – Dr Aziz said these provide essential healthy fats to support heart and brain function.

Cruciferous vegetables - Cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, kale, and cauliflower “detoxify” the body and fight inflammation. Green tomatoes and sweet potatoes – He revealed these are rich in powerful plant compounds that support cellular health. Dark chocolate – Supports heart health, brain function, and longevity - but you want chocolate that is at least 70 per cent cocoa.

Whole grains and beans – These are vital for balancing blood sugar and supporting metabolism. Extra virgin olive oil and grass-fed butter – The expert described these as “nature’s best anti-inflammatory fats” for ageing well. Bone broth and mushrooms – These are packed with collagen and immune-boosting nutrients.

Tea – Tea, such as green tea, matcha, and jiaogulan boosts metabolism, protects DNA, and extends lifespan, according to Dr Aziz. Dr Michael Aziz is the author of The Ageless Revolution: 10 Hallmarks of Aging That Hold the Secret to Defeating Disease, Reversing Age, and Living Longer , which offers a “simple, sustainable” way to slow ageing, boost vitality, and prevent disease with everyday foods. To have a healthy, balanced diet, the NHS states you should try to: Eat at least five portions of a variety of fruit and vegetables every day Base meals on higher-fibre starchy foods like potatoes, bread, rice or pasta Have some dairy or dairy alternatives (such as soya drinks) Eat some beans, pulses, fish, eggs, meat and other protein Choose unsaturated oils and spreads, and eat them in small amounts Drink plenty of fluids (at least six to eight glasses a day).
