But which are the most desirable? As part of a new study, researchers asked 32 people to rate how attractive they found faces whose lips had been manipulated to different sizes. And the results revealed a stark contrast between men and women when it comes to the perfect lips.

On female faces, women said they preferred slightly plumped lips - like Angelina Jolie , Kylie Jenner and Jessica Simpson . In contrast, men said they preferred women with natural-sized lips like Kate Winslet , Beyonce and Emma Thompson . However, both men and women rated men with thinner lips as more attractive.

So, which of these lips would you say are the most desirable? The seven levels of lip size for both men and women presented to participants, who rated the female with slightly plumped lips (0%) and the male with slightly thinner lips (-33%) as the most attractive The trend for lip fillers is in part driven by social media influencers and reality TV stars—such as ITV Love Island star Nicole Samuel, who sports an enhanced pout Writing in the journal, Proceedings of the Royal Society B, the team said: 'Perceiving faces as attractive or not guides decisions to approach or date a person and can sway opinions in recruiting and legal proceedings. 'However, the mechanisms underlying facial attractiveness are not fully understood. 'Here, we use a local feature manipulation - lip expansion or contraction - and show that it alters the perceived attractiveness of male and female faces.

'Our data suggest that costly cosmetic procedures that increase female lip size, such as injectibles and lip-enhancing surgeries, may not appeal to men.' Lip size has previously been linked to being an indicator of genetic sex, reproductive health and fertility. But the researchers warned that constant exposure to enhanced lips could lead to 'lip dysmorphia', adding that there is 'clear evidence that when participants were exposed to a new lip size, that lip size became the new norm'.

'Exposure to distorted lips that have been artificially expanded beyond biological limits could initiate an iterative process whereby only further expansion to even plumper lips will be perceived as attractive to an adapted observer,' they said. 'Ultimately, such a process would culminate in lip dysmorphia.' A poll of 51,000 young people in the UK, carried out by Save Face, found that 59 per cent see treatments such as lip fillers as comparable to getting a haircut or manicure. While only seven per cent said they had undergone cosmetic procedures such as lip fillers themselves, 68 per cent said one or more of their friendship group had these procedures done. Experts have previously warned about the 'wild west' lip filler industry, with many patients left in pain and embarrassed by their appearance.
