In Pakistan, civil servants are supposed to be the backbone of governance. Yet political interference has turned many into personal aides for politicians. Merit is often ignored in favour of loyalty.

Officers are frequently transferred or sidelined for refusing political orders. This system weakens institutions and discourages professionalism. Even honest officers face pressure to carry out unfair demands to keep their jobs, leading to inefficiency, corruption, and bad governance.

To restore integrity, Pakistan must implement real civil service reforms: hiring should be merit-based, officers should be given job security and fixed tenures, and promotions must be based on performance, not political affiliations. Strong laws and independent oversight are essential if civil servants are to serve the people honestly. BILAL YOUNUS SHAIKH, Sindh.
