RUGBY UNION: RESPECT for the game of rugby union is paramount. This is the stern challenge echoed by Benson Upas to teams taking part in the 2025 Niu Power Sports Tok 7s tournament. Upas said: “I think we have set the precedence in the past.
“The responsibility goes back to the team to manage their spectators. “Most of our teams now have their social media platforms and they can reach out to their followers telling them if they do the wrong thing from the spectators’ view, they will be penalised,” said Upas. He said they have suspended a couple of teams in the past for similar cases of this nature.
“On that track record, one or two will not participate this weekend. “One participated in another sevens tournament, resulting in some violence. “It was not our tournament, but we have to apply the penalty because it is rugby.
“Discipline is something that we always stress, as it is important and paramount for the tournament and the teams to understand,” said Upas. The message Upas delivered is focused on reminding teams set to take part in this weekends challenge, that match officials cannot control every thing. “Most things we cannot control but again we give it back to the teams.
“You participate, manage your players, officials and our officials taking the field will try as much as possible to respect them. “They (match officials) are human and they make mistakes..
.so let us just enjoy the game,” he added..
