New Delhi: Residents of Delhi NCR woke up to chilly winds on Friday, with the minimum temperature recorded at 6 degrees Celsius. On Thursday, the temperature dropped to a season's low of 4.5 degrees Celsius, marking the coldest December day in three years.
Moreover, the minimum temperatures in Delhi’s Pusa and Ayanagar areas dropped to 3.2 degrees Celsius and 3.8 degrees Celsius, respectively, with cold wave conditions reported, according to data from the regional meteorological centre in New Delhi.
Cold wave conditions continued to grip parts of the city, pushing temperatures to well below normal levels. Thursday’s temperature was four degrees lower than usual and even fell below some hill stations, such as Shimla (where the low was 5 degrees Celsius) and Mussoorie (6.9 degrees Celsius).
The last time Delhi saw such a low in December was December 20, 2021, with a temperature of 3.2 degrees Celsius. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert, forecasting cold wave conditions to persist until Saturday, with temperatures hovering around 4 degrees Celsius in Safdarjung and potentially dipping further at other stations.
The chilly weather is being attributed to the ongoing western disturbance, which has also been bringing fresh snowfall to the mountains, contributing to the consistent northwesterly winds across the region. Delhi AQI Air quality in the National Capital remained in the 'poor category' on Friday morning, as per the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). According to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) data, Delhi's air quality levels were recorded at 280 in Alipur, 296 in Ashok Vihar,280 in ITO and 228 in DTU.
Other areas such as Anand Vihar reported an AQI of 309, Dwarka Sec 8 recorded 315, Nehru Nagar had 334, and IGI Airport (T3) had 281, Rohini 329, Pusa 309 and Mundka 307. GRAP-4 Restrictions Amid the weather conditions in Delhi, the Supreme Court permitted the relaxation of GRAP Stage IV restrictions in Delhi-NCR to GRAP Stage II, and the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM), revoked Stages IV and III of GRAP in the region. However, GRAP Stages II and I will continue to remain in force across the entire NCR.
