Residents resort to air purifiers

Ludhiana: Rise in air pollution has come with increased sale of air purifiers and plants which are said to purify the air. Ashok Dhawan, owner of a prominent electronic showroom in Ludhiana, said that every day, they get demand for five to seven air purifiers. He added that they were struggling to meet the increased demand.

According to Dhawan, after Delhi NCR, people in Ludhiana were also increasingly resorting to air purifiers. Earlier, he said those with respiratory issues bought air purifiers, but now others were also going for it. “Given the increase in demand due to air pollution, one can say that air purifiers are becoming a commodity like washing machines and televisions,” he said.



Varun, a sales executive from a reputed international brand of air purifiers on Ferozepur road also confirmed the rise in sale of air purifiers. He said that while the firm sold two to three air purifiers on average, they had been selling 20 to 25 air purifiers in Oct, Nov and Dec each. He said that air pollution increased as the festival season coincided with paddy harvesting.

According to him, sale of air purifiers had increased in the last three to four years, with premium customers buying purifiers for Rs 15,000 and above. “However after companies started manufacturing air purifiers for Rs 8,000 and Rs 9,000 around last year, more people are buying them,” said the sales executive. Indoor plants a hit Juhi Bakhshi, owner of a plant nursery, said that more people were buying plants, especially trees giving shade and fruits.
