Kupwara, Nov 2: Residents of the snowbound Keran area in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district have demanded the posting of a gynecologist at the New Type Primary Health Centre (NTPHC) to alleviate the hardships faced by pregnant women. They stated that they endure severe difficulties due to the absence of a gynecologist, forcing them to travel over sixty kilometers to Kupwara for medical care. “During heavy snowfall, Keran is cut off from the district headquarters for several days, and as a result, pregnant women bear the brunt of this situation because traffic on the Kupwara-Keran road is suspended.

Last year, several pregnant women had to be airlifted from Keran after they developed complications. In fact, one woman delivered her baby after being admitted to NTPHC Keran when the Kupwara-Keran road was blocked due to heavy snowfall.” “We have moved from pillar to post to have our genuine demand fulfilled, but nothing has been done so far in this regard.

We have repeatedly requested the concerned authorities to depute a gynecologist here at least twice a week, but our legitimate demand has still not been met. We are now fed up and have lost hope of seeing a gynecologist at our hospital,” said another local. The residents are seeking the immediate intervention of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to address their plight and end the hardships they are facing.
