Say oversight essential to public interestThe House of Representatives Ad-Hoc Committee on Rivers State Oversight has summoned the Sole Administrator of Rivers State, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (retd), to appear before it today, April 17, 2025.This move is part of the committee’s constitutional obligation to assess governance in the state following the emergency rule declared by President Bola Tinubu.The invitation was confirmed in a statement issued by the House Spokesperson, Akin Rotimi, on Wednesday.



According to the statement, the committee is acting in line with its constitutional mandate under Section 11(4) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), which empowers it to exercise full legislative oversight.Following the declaration of emergency rule in Rivers State and the suspension of the State House of Assembly, President Tinubu appointed Vice Admiral Ibas (retd) to administer the state for an initial period of six months. The National Assembly also assumed legislative responsibilities for the state, as stipulated by the Constitution.

On Tuesday, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, inaugurated a 21-member ad-hoc committee, led by House Leader, Prof. Julius Ihonvbere, to carry out the task.

During the inauguration, Speaker Abbas urged the committee to approach its work with neutrality and a strong sense of duty.In his remarks, Prof. Ihonvbere stated that the committee’s meeting with the Sole Administrator was both timely and essential.

“This engagement is vital to determine the true state of affairs in Rivers State and ensure that the House is properly informed in the exercise of its oversight duties in the public interest,” he said.The statement further noted that the Sole Administrator is expected to appear before the committee on Thursday, April 17, 2025, at 4:00 PM in Room 414, House of Representatives New Building, National Assembly Complex, Abuja.The committee reiterated its commitment to due process and transparency, stating, “A formal letter of invitation has been sent and acknowledged.
