The Philadelphia 76ers are absolutely floundering right now, but it does not look like a management change is on the horizon for the time being. Sam Amick of The Athletic reported this week on the job security of both president Daryl Morey and head coach Nick Nurse amid the team’s rough sledding to start the NBA season. Amick reports that both Morey and Nurse are “safe” right now and that there are no internal discussions right now about the respective job statuses of either.
Nurse, a former NBA champion head coach and one-time Coach of the Year with the Toronto Raptors, is in his second season in charge of the 76ers and still has a strong reputation as a technician. As for Morey, who has been in his post since 2020, his decision to forgo a max contract for James Harden only to give out one to a lower-ceiling fellow 30-something in Paul George isn’t looking very good right now. But Morey has still banked some nice goodwill in Philly with quality moves such as drafting Tyrese Maxey and Jared McCain as well as signing Kelly Oubre Jr.
for cheap and somehow managing to get rid of Ben Simmons. Still, however, the 76ers have dipped to an NBA-worst 2-11 this season and now reportedly have star players calling each other out in the locker room . Part of that though may be that their Big Three of George, Maxey and Joel Embiid has yet to play a single game together all year, so it sounds like no scapegoat firings will be made by Philly just yet.
