Samsung’s Android 15 update, One UI 7, has been heavily delayed, with the stable rollout only due to start next week – a whopping six months after Google first finalized Android 15. Things appear to be moving much faster for One UI 8, though, with Samsung’s Android 16 update reportedly set to debut alongside the company’s next generation foldables. The story of One UI 7 is a long one, with Samsung having not even released a beta for the update until December 2024.

The Galaxy S25 series launched in January with One UI 7 out of the box, but no one else could use it at the time. The stable update, as was finally confirmed last month, will start rolling out early next week. It’s been a messy and excruciating delay.

SamMobile claims that won’t be the case for the next update. A new report suggests that Samsung will ship the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Galaxy Z Flip 7 with One UI 8 out of the box, based on Android 16. This aligns with prior reporting, which cited evidence that internal testing for One UI 8 was already underway , as well as rumors regarding Samsung skipping directly from One UI 7.

1.1 updates. There’s no word on when other devices, such as Galaxy S25 and other last-gen Galaxy devices, might be getting One UI 8, but the turnaround time here would still put everything drastically ahead of One UI 7’s schedule.

If this report is correct, it would put Samsung’s launch as early as July, with the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Flip 6 having launched on July 10, 2024 . There’s no word just yet on when the Fold 7 and Flip 7 will debut, but it’s very likely they’ll be in the same ballpark. The actual release date for last year’s phones was July 24.

Google is running on an accelerated release schedule for Android 16, with the update potentially launching in June or July, meaning Samsung could theoretically be launching the first devices running the latest version of Android out of the box this year, an honor usually reserved for Pixel phones. Beta 4, the final one that was announced, is due to launch sometime this month. More on Android 16: Android 16 Beta 3.
