Report: Bayer Leverkusen star and Bayern Munich transfer target Florian Wirtz considering summer move

According to a report from kicker (as captured by @iMiaSanMia ), Bayer Leverkusen ace Florian Wirtz could be reconsidering his previous plan to sign a contract extension with the club. This news should put Bayern Munich on high alert as the Bavarians have been closely linked to Wirtz for years, though Manchester City has also been lurking around the Germany international of late: Bayer Leverkusen and Florian Wirtz’s camp have had an agreement in principle over a new contract since December, in case the player decided to stay. Leverkusen have been waiting for a final confirmation from Wirtz since then, but the player’s position seems to have changed.

Initially, the position of Wirtz’s camp was that the player still needed to take steps in his development, and the best place to do this would be in Leverkusen, with a move to a top club planned after the World Cup. But now Wirtz is considering a move already this summer, which would not be a step too soon considering the level that he’s already reached. While that is all very interesting, this portion below might actually pique the interest of Bayern Munich fans even more.

Per kicker, Uli Hoeneß, who recently bemoaned the club’s finances, could be willing to really go “all in” by financing a bank loan to have enough money to pay for Wirtz: Bayern have been publicly courting Wirtz for weeks. It is said that Uli Hoeneß would even be ready to take a [bank] loan in order to finance the move. The decision not to extend Thomas Müller’s contract also comes in the context of the efforts to sign Wirtz.

In addition to Bayern, Manchester City are interested in Wirtz to replace Kevin De Bruyne and make him a key part of their squad rebuild. Leverkusen have not set a deadline for Wirtz and his parents. They have no choice but to wait and see what Wirtz decides for the new season as they have no leverage to force a decision.

It has already been rumored that one reason that club executives were pushing so hard to move on from Thomas Müller was because they wanted to free up room in the salary budget for Wirtz.
