Renewed insurance on next day of accident; police to grill car owner

KOLLAM: New information surface in the hit and run accident at Mynagappally in Kollam claiming the life of a scooter passenger. The car's insurance policy was renewed after the accident. The insurance of the car had expired on September 13. The car did not have insurance on the day of the accident. After the accident, the policy was taken online from United India Insurance Company.



The new policy is for one year from September 16. The car is in the name of a woman, mother of accused Muhammad Ajmal's friend. The accident happened when Ajmal along with Dr Sreekutty was returning after consuming liquor at his friend’s house in Sasthamcotta.

The police said they will summon the owner of the car and take his detailed statement. The accused, including the doctor, remanded in the case, will be taken into police custody. Muhammad Ajmal (29) of Edakulangara in Karunagappally and Dr Sreekutty (27) of Neyyatinkara were arrested the other day.

Ajmal, who was driving the car, was charged with culpable homicide. A charge of incitement was charged against Sreekutty after finding that she forced Ajmal to drive the car away without engaging in rescue operations when the accident happened. Proceedings have also been initiated to cancel Ajmal's driving license.

Meantime, the police registered a case against those who chased the accused for fleeing without stopping after the accident. The Karunagappally police registered a case against five following Ajmal's statement that he was chased in vehicles and stopped them near Karunagappally court and assaulted them..
