Many homeowners tend to turn to costly mould -removal chemicals when facing mould issues, but these solutions can be both harsh on surfaces and detrimental to indoor air quality. However, as one expert reveals, there is a far simpler and more affordable remedy lurking right in your kitchen cupboard. According to Scott Evans from Pink Storage: "Mould thrives in damp environments, and salt is a natural moisture absorbent.

" He suggests that salt can serve as an effective, chemical-free solution to combat mould, a method that many may not have considered. By reducing excess moisture in your home, this £1.80 method not only tackles existing mould but also helps prevent its future growth.

Scott explained how salt works its magic: "Salt absorbs moisture in your home through a process called osmosis, which you may remember from your time in school." By drawing out water from the mould, you effectively stop its ability to thrive. Plus, salt possesses mild antimicrobial properties, making it an excellent option for preventing mould's return.

"Many people store belongings in damp areas like basements or garages without realising they are storing their items where mould can grow," Scott warned. To preemptively combat mould, he recommends placing dishes of salt in these spaces to absorb moisture before it becomes a problem. For those already facing mould issues, Scott recommends: "If you already have dampness and mould, you can still use salt to stop mould in its tracks.

" Begin by wiping away any excess moisture on affected surfaces with a dry cloth, then generously sprinkle table salt over the mould and let it work overnight. The salt will draw moisture from the mould, breaking it down effectively. For stubborn patches, Scott suggests creating a salt paste by mixing salt with a little water and applying it to the area.

"Let this paste dry and follow the same steps above to remove the mould from your walls or surfaces," the expert advised. To protect your home further, you can mix two tablespoons of salt with warm water and use this solution to wipe down walls and windowsills. This creates a thin protective layer that discourages mould spores from settling, giving you peace of mind throughout the damp months ahead.
