Remi Bader has finally opened up about her drastic weight loss. After months of ignoring questions her body, the influencer shared that she got weight loss surgery in December 2023 in an interview with magazine. Bader explained that she underwent a newer type of bariatric surgery called single anastomosis duodenal-ileal bypass (SADI-S), which is a hybrid of two existing popular weight loss surgeries, the gastric sleeve and gastric bypass.
According to , SADI-S involves removing the outer portion of the stomach so it looks like a “narrow sleeve” and also connecting a part of the upper small intestine to the loop of the lower small intestine. The surgery causes hormonal changes that reduce hunger and the body to absorb fewer calories. After the surgery, Bader said she thought that the recovery process would be easy, but it was anything but that.
“I need to say that it was the most brutal thing," she said. “I was in recovery hours, hours, hours, hours, throwing up. It was not normal," she continued.
"I was supposed to leave (the hospital) in one day. I could not stop projectile vomiting, and I couldn’t drink water. They won’t let you leave if you can’t drink water.
I actually can’t explain how horrible it was.” For three months after, Bader said she was "not f---king OK." Even though she got discharged from the hospital in three days, she still couldn't eat or drink anything for weeks and her vomiting continued.
Before she knew it, Bader fell into a "deep depression," which she called "the scariest time of my life." Things didn't get better for the fashionista until she was prescribed depression and anxiety medicine that made her feel "so much better." Bader has since regained her confidence and started taking care of herself like never before, she said.
She had previously struggled with binge eating and gained a large amount of weight in a short period a few years ago, which resulted in chronic pain, back problems and more health issues. She said she also tried multiple weight loss medications and other prescriptions to address her mental health, but nothing worked. But since recovering from the surgery, her health is better than ever, she shared on .
She said she hasn't had any back issues and recently had normal bloodwork results for the first time in five years. Bader is also seeing a therapist, working out regularly and experiences fewer binge-eating urges. “I’m still struggling and I have those thoughts, but I can’t physically binge as much because I don’t have the room for it,” she said.
She has had to make some challenging lifestyle adjustments since the surgery, though. “You cannot drink and eat within the same 30 minutes,” she explained, because if she does, then she feels sick. “Sometimes I’m out to dinner with friends, and I run to the bathroom.
It’s also hard; I’m going to these events and dinners, and I’m constantly getting sick,” she said. Bader said there was also a time where she felt like food was “stuck” in her chest and stomach. “It’s also making me nauseous at the same time.
So it’s like, OK, am I about to throw up or should I sit and make myself deal with this and maybe walk around?” she said, adding that she's also lost a lot of hair since the surgery. Another major adjustment? Processing her new apperance. “It’s really confusing to be so quickly in a different body but have the exact same brain," she said.
