Remembrance Day 2024: Services taking place across Sussex

A number of services are taking place across the county to mark Remembrance Day.

A number of services are taking place across the county to mark Remembrance Day. Each year, the nation pays its respects to soldiers who served in conflict on November 11, a tradition that has been observed since the end of the First World War. In Sussex, parades and ceremonies are being held to honour those veterans.

Brighton On Thursday, November 7, a service remembering the Battle of Boar’s Head will be held at the Brighton War Memorial in Old Steine at 10.45am. On Remembrance Sunday, November 10, a number of events are taking place including: A service at the The Royal Sussex Regiment Memorial in Regency Square at 9am.



A parade and service at the Brighton War Memorial in Old Steine at 10.50am. A service and wreath laying at Easthill Park in Portslade at 10.

45am. Wreath laying at Hove Cemetery in Old Shoreham Road at 11am. A parade and service at the Rottingdean war memorial on the village green at 11.

30am. A parade and service at the war memorial in Grand Avenue, Hove, at 2.30pm.

The parade will proceed to All Saints Church in The Drive for the civic memorial service. On Monday, November 11, two-minute silences and services will be held at the Old Steine war memorial in Brighton, the Grand Avenue war memorial in Hove and the Rottingdean war memorial on the village green at 11am. Councillor Amanda Grimshaw, Brighton and Hove City Council’s armed forces champion, said: “Remembrance Day is an opportunity for everyone to stop for a moment to remember and honour the sacrifice of all those who have lost their lives through conflict.

In Brighton and Hove, we will also mark those from the city who are serving soldiers or reserves. READ MORE: Burgess Hill D-Day veteran dies before Remembrance Sunday “It’s a time for people across faiths, cultures and backgrounds to unite in hope for peace and end of conflict. “This year, we’re proud to have allocated extra funding to support Remembrance events to make sure our communities continue to mark the occasion with the meaning and dignity it deserves.

“We’ve commemorated the 80th anniversary of D-Day, remembered fallen soldiers in the Battle of Boar’s Head and honoured Undivided Indian soldiers who fought for our country at a multi-faith event at the Royal Pavilion Garden. “I invite everyone to join in on a community event or just take a quiet moment on their own to remember those who gave their life for their country and reflect on the devastating effects of wars and hatred.” Worthing On Monday, November 4, the Field of Remembrance will be opened at the Worthing War Memorial, outside Worthing Town Hall in Chapel Road, at 11am.

Remembrance Day service in Worthing last year (Image: Sussex News and Pictures) On Remembrance Sunday, November 10, a two-minute silence will be held at Worthing War Memorial at 11am, followed by commemorative wreaths and the annual parade past Worthing Town Hall. For Armistice Day, November 11, there will be another two-minute silence from 11am at Worthing War Memorial. Shoreham On Sunday, November 10, a march will proceed from Shoreham Community Centre in Pond Road at 9.

30am to St Mary’s Church for a service and wreath laying at the war memorial. On Monday, November 11, a short service and wreath laying will be conducted at the Shoreham war memorial at 11am. Eastbourne On Sunday, November 10, a civic ceremony will be held at the Eastbourne war memorial in Cornfield Road at 10.

45am. On Monday, November 11, two services will be held at the Hampden Park Memorial and at the War Memorial Houses in Victoria Drive at 10.45am.

Horsham On Sunday, November 10, a parade will be led from the BT Exchange car park in Horsham town centre at 10.30am to the war memorial in Carfax, followed by a service of remembrance at St Mary's Church. A service will be held at Horsham's war memorial in Carfax on Monday, November 11, at 10.
