Remembering The Maverick Genius Shankar Nag On His Birth Anniversary

Today, November 9 marks the birth anniversary of one of the most popular filmmakers of Indian cinema, Shankar Nag. With a career spanning over just 12, Shankar Nag achieved what many could only dream of. Younger brother of senior actor Anant Nag, he directed some of the iconic films including the most popular Indian television series, Malgudi Days.

It has been 34 years since the visionary filmmaker and actor Shankar Nag passed away in a road accident. Yet, his legacy continues and inspires many. One may still find his image from his most popular commercial films, Auto Raja or Sangliyana being adored on the auto-rickshaws all across Karnataka.

Shankar Nag lives on There are even countless auto-rickshaw stands, public roads and circles that are named after the actor-director. Also, when remembering his legacy, many would often wonder what Shankar Nag would have done had been alive today! After making his debut as an actor in Girish Karnad’s directorial, Ondanondu Kaladalli for which he bagged the Best Actor (male) award at the 7th International Film Festival of India, Shankar Nag never looked back or took a break even for a day in a career that unfortunately lasted for only 13 years. However, he achieved what one can only dream of with multiple recognitions at both National and State level through his cinematic and public works.

He remade it in Hindi as Lalach with Vinod Mehra in the lead. He went onto direct six more films including Geetha, Janma Janmada Anubandha, Hosa Theerpu, Nodi Swamy Navirodu Hige, Accident and Ondu Muttina Kathe starring the legendary Kannada actor Dr.

Rajkumar. Despite having no formal martial arts training, Shankar Nag is fondly referred to as ‘Karate King’ for his unique action skills performed in most of his action dramas. His film, Accident won the National Film Award for Best Film on other Social Issues.

It was the first film to win it in the category. Apart from a successful career in films, Shankar directed the iconic television series, Malgudi Days. As an actor, he went onto act in at least 80 films and even has the record of acting in 15 films in a calendar year, just one less than the record holder, Dr Rajkumar who acted in 16 films in a year.

He even dreamed of Metro Rail services, recreation club, low-cost housing projects, state of the art studios and even Ranga Shankara, the iconic theatre in Bengaluru which continues to serve the theatre enthusiast around the globe.
