Karnataka News: Karnataka Home Minister G Parameshwara has publicly apologised following a widespread criticism over his comments regarding a recent sexual assault incident in Bengaluru’s BTM Layout. Addressing reporters on Tuesday, Parameshwara clarified, “Statement I made yesterday wasn’t understood properly. I am someone who has always had a lot of concern for the safety of women.
I have ensured Nirbhaya funds are utilised well for their protection. I don’t want my statement to be twisted. Whatever legal action needs to be taken will be done in accordance with the law. I have also instructed our commissioner to increase beat patrolling.” The remark was widely criticised as insensitive, especially as the assault was captured on CCTV and sparked public outrage.
The minister’s remarks drew significant criticism online, with many describing them as ‘insensitive’ and ‘tone-deaf’ given the seriousness of the crime. An unidentified man approached them, cornered one of the women, and groped her before fleeing. The visibly shaken women were seen leaving the area shortly after the attack. In response to the public outcry, Parameshwara has directed Bengaluru police to enhance beat patrolling, particularly during late hours, to ensure the safety of women in the city.
