IT feels like a long time since we have seen the best of Reece Cole, but inspired by his equaliser in Tuesday’s draw with Wigan Athletic, and then the winner over Bristol Rovers, the playmaker looked back to his best in the colours of Exeter City. There is no doubt the crowd love Cole – the ‘Reece Cole again’ song was sung almost throughout the second half of Tuesday’s game – and the 26-year-old is delighted to be back and doing what he does best after arguably the most frustrating season of his career to date. Now, he wants a strong finish to the campaign and followed on from Tuesday’s goalscoring feat with an even better one in the League One Westcountry derby at Bristol Rovers on Saturday.
“I just want to play as much as I can and help the team out as much as I can in whatever form that is, whether it’s a starter or a finisher. So, yes, just stay injury-free until the end of the season and help the team – that’s my aim," Cole said. “It’s been a really frustrating season with the little niggling injuries I kept picking up, just probably a little bit off my own back and trying to rush myself back too quick and not being 100 per-cent ready and causing something else to go because I’m overcompensating on different areas of my body, which I’ve now learnt.
“It’s more not listening to the advice of the physios, just listening to my own body and what I feel. I’ve never really been an injured player, so I didn’t know what some of those feelings were like in my body. I just thought I can get through it, but unfortunately, I couldn’t.
So now I’m back fit and have been back fit for a number of weeks now.” "We know he can do it and have seen his quality," manager Gary Caldwell said. "He has not been fit enough, had too many injuries, and he knows he has to be better, but in and aroud the box there is not many in the league better an the finish has to be exceptional to keep it down, the volley, the technique, and it is great that the fans sing his name.
