Surat: A fire in a scrap and waste collection yard erupted again at Gabheni in Sachin on Monday, after a massive fire was controlled on Saturday after over 24 hours of firefighting. The fire began in textile waste heaps and was controlled after nearly six hours of firefighting on Monday. Surat Fire and Emergency Services (SFES) received a call at around 12.
41am. After the call, firefighters rushed to Gabheni village where the fire was spreading in the waste collection ground. The fire started in the textile waste collection ground, which is a kilometre away from the scrap yard where the fire began on Friday and continued for over 24 hours.
"It took nearly six hours for the fire team to control it. By 7am on Monday, the fire was completely doused," said an SFES official. How the fire began is yet to be investigated.
Despite multiple attempts to call the owners of the scrap yards where the textile waste was collected, they have not appeared. SFES is to issue notices to the owners of these properties and their operators. Sources in SFES said the vast quantity of textile and plastic waste was supposed to be used in industrial units as fuel.
