The Lowcountry has called active adults from across the state and beyond to put down roots along the coast and live their golden years to the fullest. As you explore things to do, places to visit and ways to stay healthy and active, we encourage you to think about how you’re living your best life. Kay, a resident from West Ashley, recently shared that she loves exercising through classes like Zumba and dance or playing pickleball and is also taking courses through the Center for Creative Retirement at the College of Charleston.

She loves going to Second Sunday on King with her family, seeing shows at the Dock Street Theatre and attending events at the Gailliard Center. Jackie, another Charleston resident, loves taking sewing and Italian classes to sharpen her skills and learn new hobbies. Some of her favorite events include the Greek Festival, the Holiday Festival of Lights on James Island, and going to Second Sunday on King with her family.

To stay connected with friends, Jackie enjoys playing cards, having weekly dinners, and going on cruises together. JB from Wadmalaw Island is our fitness enthusiast reader who is all about staying active and getting out in the fresh air. JB loves participating in 5K trail events, the IOP Beach Run, the Run to the Mill 5K and assault bike workouts.

When not running races or attending fitness classes, you can find JB networking, participating in fun local events like the Sand and Sea Festival, the Charleston Wine + Food Festival, or the Moja Arts Festival with family. If you’re looking for a new activity to try that will help keep your mind and body well and introduce you to a new circle of friends, Pat from Isle of Palms shared her experience with Amy Parker and her Qigong classes. After Pat retired, she was looking for something new to fill her free time, so she started taking Qigong - an energy movement practice developed by monks in ancient China.

Since then, Pat has noticed significant improvements in her balance, deep breathing, focus and strength. She also loves how welcoming the instructor, Amy Parker, makes everyone feel regardless of their skill level. Through this shared exercise, Pat gets to spend quality time moving her body, improving her mind and taking in the fresh air.
