There was a time when newspaper stalls were a common sight in Hyderabad, offering a variety of publications to eager readers. Today, however, it is difficult to find more than three such stalls across the entire city. The decline in newspaper reading is not only a loss for stall owners but also a significant blow to informed discourse and intellectual engagement within our society.

One of the primary reasons for this decline is the shift towards digital media. While online news is convenient, it often lacks the depth, credibility, and investigative journalism that traditional newspapers provide. In many countries, efforts have been made to revive the newspaper culture.

For instance, in France, the government subsidises print newspapers for students, making them more accessible. In Japan, schools actively incorporate newspaper reading into their curriculum to develop critical thinking skills. In Pakistan, similar initiatives could be introduced.

The government, media houses, and educational institutions can collaborate to encourage newspaper reading through the following measures: BZU administration evicts illegal occupants Subsidised Student Subscriptions – Schools and colleges can partner with newspapers to provide discounted or free copies to students. Newspaper Reading Corners – Public spaces such as libraries, parks, and bus stops can feature dedicated reading areas with newspapers. Incentives for Newspaper Vendors – Offering financial support or reduced licensing fees can help stall owners sustain their businesses.

Incorporating Newspapers into Education – Schools can introduce newspaper-based assignments to develop students’ analytical skills. Corporate and Government Support – Offices and government institutions can be encouraged to subscribe to newspapers to keep employees well-informed. Reviving newspaper reading is not merely about saving a medium; it is about preserving a culture of informed dialogue and critical thinking.

I urge the relevant authorities and media organisations to take immediate action before newspaper reading becomes a relic of the past. Gaza rally flays criminal silence of Muslim world over Palestinians’ bloodshed DR MUBASHIR HUSSAIN SHAIKH, Hyderabad. Tags: reading culture.
