This is in response to the Nov. 9 letter, “ Rebuilt Brighton Beach great but not safe .” As an avid cyclist, I know there are better riding routes than riding on any portion of the expressway between Two Harbors and Duluth.
May I suggest riding on Superior Street eastbound, crossing the expressway, and then riding on the Old North Shore Road? Alternatively, ride the Lakewalk through Brighton Beach — while showing some consideration for hikers! A simple warning bell while approaching and a “thank you” as you pass produces positive results. I know from experience. Expecting a bike corridor adjacent to the new bypass lane at the entrance to Brighton Beach is an unreasonable vision and reeks of what I consider cyclist overreach.
Unfortunately, there is a large safety consideration at the rebuilt Brighton Beach, and it relates to parking. There appears to be a significant shortage of parking spaces, where angled parking versus parallel parking would have produced many more spots. The net result of this shortage is that overflow parking defaults to the designated bike path on the scenic drive.
Parking there unsafely forces bikers into the traffic lane of the scenic drive. ADVERTISEMENT Tom DeSutter Duluth Email submissions to: [email protected] Include a full name, address and daytime phone number.

Reader's View: Parking, not biking, the concern at Brighton Beach
