President Trump posted a Tweet recently saying that saving the nation, which he is apparently engaged in, is tantamount to obeying any laws, which may inconveniently stand in the way of that rescue. Some of the work being done by Elon Musk has resulted in lawsuits and it’s unclear if this administration will abide by decisions halting that work. To be clear, trying to pare down “waste, fraud and abuse” that exists in governments our size is something that should be taken on.
Taking a sledgehammer to some agencies and obliterating others outright is a recipe for disaster. Trump enjoys portraying this country as being at the bottom of the barrel and himself as it’s savior. In reality, we are the envy of the world and it’s gold standard.
We have our faults, to be sure, but taking a box-cutter to the bureaucracy is not the way to solve the problem. Worse still would be to ignore the rule of law or judicial decisions, the framework upon which this country was built. Trump certainly admires many of the strongmen leaders in today’s world and is certainly an authoritarian wannabe himself.
The danger comes when the performance art turns real. He began his term in office by pardoning all the Jan. 6 rioters who attacked the U.
S. Capitol on his behalf with his tacit approval and has lied about free and fair elections, another aspect of that framework. That retribution that Trump threatened a couple of years ago now stares us in the face.
We can choose to go down this road or we can maintain the trust and faith we have in our historic institutions divided government, a reliable justice system and civil servants who perform their jobs with ability and integrity. John Gallup, South Windsor.
