Donald Trump’s descent down the golden escalator eight years ago triggered the political and moral descent that we now face daily in the United States. Of course, Trump’s cultish following continues to believe and act upon his twisted vision, and few would deny that Trump has successfully divided our country, that nearly half of the population believe his lies and are prepared to act upon them. But it is also true that Trump’s rise to power, unlike those of his dictator heroes Putin and Orban, has been met with potent resistance; and for millions of people the candidacy of Kamala Harris has restored confidence that America may in fact become sane again.

A growing number of those who supported Trump in the elections of 2016 and 2020 are now endorsing the Harris-Walz ticket. It is devoutly to be wished that the next election will continue healing the terrible breach that began eight years ago when Trump began his descent. Jack Pasanen, Burlington.
