‘Reached polling stations to be told we can’t vote’

1 2 Ludhiana: Many voters who reached polling booths in the morning were shocked to find their names missing from the voters’ list. They said that their names were showing online but when they reached the polling booths, they were told that their vote did not exist. When they tried to make inquiries, staff at the polling booths either did not respond or blamed non-availability of voting lists for the situation, they claimed.

A voter in ward number 11, Kajal, said, “When I reached the polling station, I was told that my vote had been cast. It is unjustified and unfair if someone has voted in my stead. Officials should check what is happening in polling booths.



” Ajay Kumar, who was in the same polling station, said that his name had been struck off the voting list even though he had a voter card and the voter slip issued by polling agents of the party. He said others were in a similar predicament but no one was listening to them.” Amit Sharma, a resident of ward number 71, said that names of five of his family members were not in the voter list even though they had exercised their franchise in the Parliamentary elections six months ago.

He asked on what basis they were told that their votes did not exist. A few people in Sahnewal constituency, Mundian, staged a protest after being stopped from voting. On making inquiries, they were told that the area was not in the MC limit.
