Ace India allrounder Ravindra Jadeja on Saturday, October 26 pulled off a MS Dhoni-like no-look run out to set social media on fire. With New Zealand finishing with a 301-run lead at the end of Day 2, India needed early wickets on Day 3 and Jadeja set the tone, picking three of the last five wickets, besides inflicting the brilliant run-out. It happened in the 70th over of New Zealand's second innings when Glenn Phillips, aiming for a fifty, sliced the fuller delivery from Jadeja off the back foot in front of sweeper cover and pushed for a two.
Washington Sundar, who fielded the ball very slowly to Jadeja's frustration, threw it back to the bowler and Jadeja casually flicked it onto the stumps. William O'Rourke, the batter in question, was as slow as Sundar in running between the wickets and was caught marginally short. Watch the video here: Replays then showed that O'Rourke was just a centimetre short of the crease, thus leaving Phillips stranded at 48.
The dismissal saw New Zealand being folded for 255, handing India a 259-run target to win. Meanwhile, Yashasvi Jaiswal’s brisk unbeaten 46 powered India to 81/1 at lunch on day three in pursuit of 359 against New Zealand in the must-win second Test in Pune. However, the early dismissal of captain Rohit Sharma (8) by left-arm spinner Mitchell Santner was a jarring note.
Jaiswal broke shackles with a second-ball six and raced to 46 not out off 36 deliveries with three sixes and as many boundaries. With another 278 runs required to safeguard their impeccable record at home, Indian batters face a massive task after their flop show in the first innings. Jaiswal showed intent when he thwacked Tim Southee for a six over deep square leg, following it up with a boundary past gully.
