Late industrialist and philanthropist Ratan Tata, also known for his deep affection for animals, has made special provisions in his will for his pet German Shepherd, Tito. Tata has allocated Rs 12 lakh for Tito's care, with Rs 30,000 to be disbursed every quarter. As per the will, Tito will remain under the care of Rajan Shaw, Tata’s cook.
Tito, who was adopted six years ago after Tata’s previous pet of the same name passed away, held a special place in the industrialist’s life. Tata’s lifelong love for dogs is well known, and his commitment to animal welfare has been evident in various initiatives. In a touching display of his love for animals, he once skipped a 2018 award ceremony hosted by Prince Charles - where he was to be honoured for his philanthropy - because one of his pet dogs was unwell.
Tata chose to remain by the side of his ailing pet instead. Upon learning this, Prince Charles had remarked, “That’s a man. That’s the man Ratan is.
That’s why the house of Tata is what it is.” In July 2023, Tata inaugurated India’s first Small Animal Hospital in Mahalaxmi, Mumbai, equipped with ICUs, HDUs, CT scans, X-rays, and MRI facilities for pet treatment. Beyond his affection for dogs, Tata was known for his generosity towards employees and those close to him.
His provision for Tito in his will reflects his enduring love for animals and his unwavering commitment to their well-being. The Tata Group patriarch made his 'last' will on February 23, 2022. The industrialist, who passed away on October 9, 2024, allocated most of his wealth, including shares in Tata Sons, to charitable causes.
He also ensured provisions for his family, close friends, staff, and his beloved pets..
