Black Mirror season seven stars Tracee Ellis Ross and Rashida Jones have revealed which episodes of Charlie Booker’s dark sci-fi anthology series have wormed their way into their brains — and which roles they’d have loved to played first.new BrightcovePlayer('6103636748001', '1656287865355575363', 'zf2tqmk2', 'brightcove-video-player-cc4177f35b');The two actors appear in the upcoming episode ‘Common People’, about a desperate husband who signs his wife up to a high-tech medical system to save her life.Ross plays Gaynor, an executive for a tech company selling an implant service to married couple Amanda (Jones) and Mike (Chris O’Dowd).
Unfortunately, like all things Black Mirror, it comes with a pretty big catch. “That’s part of why I love Black Mirror, you see these people doing something that you don’t usually see them do. That’s why it was so exciting to get an offer, because you want to get in there and do it too.
Everybody’s performances [in the series] have been so stellar,” Ross told PEDESTRIAN.TV. Just an unsuspecting couple, in true Black Mirror fashion.
(Source: supplied)What episodes stand out to Rashida Jones and Tracee Ellis Ross?Speaking to P.TV, Jones admitted there’s one episode from the past that she’d have loved to get her hands on and that’s season six’s ‘Joan Is Awful’. You know, the one where an average woman discovers a Netflix-style streaming service has made a prestige drama about her life, and it’s all being generated by AI without her even knowing.
“I have to say, Annie Murphy was incredible on ‘Joan Is Awful’, but I was like ‘that’s a great performance and that’s a great role’,” Jones told PEDESTRIAN.TV. “She got to have so much fun, and she had to get so deep and dirty into that role.
It was so great.”Now, I’m all for exciting, dynamic, complicated female characters in the media — and Jones wholeheartedly agreed. “I love how [series creator Charlie Brooker] gives women the opportunity to really push it to the extreme [with these roles],” she said.
Pretty cool to see Rashida in front of the camera this time, after she co-wrote ‘Nosedive’ back in season three. (Source: supplied)She’s also got a few favourite episodes from Black Mirror so far, describing season one’s ‘The Entire History of You’ a “classic” while season four’s ‘Hang The DJ’ is “amazing”. But if she had to pick just one, Jones indicated it would have to be season three’s ‘San Junipero’, which happens to be one of the only happy-ending episodes in the series’ 14-year-run.
“I love ‘San Junipero’ because Charlie is, at the end of the day, a big softy and it’s such a romantic episode,” Jones dished. Meanwhile, Ross stopped short of revealing if there’s an episode from the last seven seasons she’d have loved to work on, but she’s previously indicated there’s one that lives in her head rent-free: the “fucking pig episode” from season one, AKA ‘The National Anthem’. (If you know, you know).
You just know shit’s about to go down. (Source: supplied)Making the pivot from comedy to Black MirrorMany of us might associate Rashida Jones, Tracee Ellis Ross, and Chris O’Dowd with their more comedic offerings, whether that’s Parks and Rec, Black-ish, or The IT Crowd. But according to Jones, there’s a really clever reason why they fit perfectly into ‘Common People’.
“I feel like the casting is pretty intentional on Charlie Brooker’s part because what the three of us have in common is this historical likeability, which means you’re immediately on board with the ride,” she told P.TV.“So, when things start to get dark, you’re like ‘why? Why are you taking her?’ as compared to somebody where you’re already waiting for it.
