Surat: The Athwalines police nabbed a 26-year-old rape convict, who sexually assaulted a five-year-old girl while on parole, after he was spotted in the CCTV footage in the lanes of the Nanpura area. The convict, Jamil alias Jamu Pathan , was sentenced to a 20-year jail term in a sexual assault case in 2021 and was recently granted parole. Around Sunday midnight, he went to Banarasi Mohalla in the narrow lanes of Nanpura, where he saw the girl sleeping with her mother in a room.
He abducted her and started running in the lanes to avoid getting caught. While running, he lost balance and fell down. The girl started crying, but Pathan began sexually assaulting her, police said.
The whole incident of abduction and sexual assault was recorded in the CCTV footage installed in the lanes. Hearing the girl crying, some people came out and rescued her. Locals handed over the CCTV footage to the Athwalines police.
Athwalines police inspector RR Makwana said six teams were formed, and they started searching for the man seen in the CCTV footage. After analysing 100 CCTV recordings, the accused was traced to the Badekha Chakla area and was nabbed. On ascertaining his identity, the police found that Pathan was on parole.
He was booked under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Samhita for rape and sections of the Protection of Children From Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act..
