CHENNAI: In a display of dominance that is rarely witnessed against the elite teams, Tamil Nadu showcased its batting prowess on Day 2 of the Ranji Trophy match against Delhi, finishing the first innings at a formidable 674/6 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, New Delhi, on Saturday. This is Tamil Nadu’s highest ever Ranji Trophy score against Delhi, surpassing the previous record of 592 which was stacked up way back in 2000-01 season. After starting the day at 379/1, Tamil Nadu continued to build the lead, with Washington Sundar scoring an impressive 152 before falling to Himanshu Chauhan, caught by Sanat Sangwan.
Pradosh Ranjan Paul also made a mark, registering his first century of the season with a brilliant 117 off 175 balls, before being bowled by Jonty Sidhu. Runs continued to flow freely on Day 2, as Tamil Nadu contemptuously dismantled the Delhi bowling attack, with contributions from other batsmen, including C Andre Siddarth who scored 66 off 92 balls. Earlier, the foundation for the plunder was laid on day one itself by the opening pair of Sai Sudharsan and N Jagadeesan, who shared a solid 150-run partnership, marking their consecutive 100-plus partnerships of the season.
Sai Sudharshan’s departure after scoring double ton did not help Delhi’s cause, as the ones following him were marauders without mercy. Delhi will rue its decision to bowl first, as the Southern team kept piling on the runs. Up against a mammoth score, Delhi ended Day 2 at 43 without any loss, trailing by 631 runs.
