Jharkhand took themselves to a commanding position in their second-round match of Ranji Trophy Elite Group D, as they finished their first innings scoring 417 from 135.4 overs on a weather-hit second day in Ahmedabad on Saturday. In reply, Railways reached 19 for one from 7.

1 overs at tea, after which no play was possible at ADSA Railways Cricket Ground. Only 53.1 overs were possible on the day as the entire third session was lost due to bad weather.

Resuming the day on 325/5, Virat Singh continued to add to his century on Day 1 and reached 128 off 250 balls when he lost his stumps to off-spinner Rajat Nirwal in the 19th over of the day. Virat's steady innings was studded with 12 fours and two maximums, and he was the first Jharkhand wicket to fall on Saturday. Other overnight unbeaten batter Anukul Roy — the Kolkata Knight Riders all-rounder — did not last long, returning on 17 off 64 balls as Jharkhand reached 377/7 at lunch.

Thereafter, the Jharkhand lower order made small but valuable contributions as the visitors breached the 400-run mark in the post-lunch session. The innings came to an end when pick of the Railways bowler Himangshu Sangwan completed his five-for, rattling Vivekanand Tiwari's stumps as the last Jharkhand man to be out. Jharkhand made an early inroad when opening bowler Saurabh Shekhar scalped Railways opener Shivam Chaudhary for a duck in the last ball of the third over with only four runs on the board.

Then Railways skipper Pratham Singh (3 batting) joined hands with other opener Vivek Singh (16 batting) to see there is no further damage till an early tea was taken as rain stopped play after only 7.1 overs of their innings. Jharkhand will hope for a good day of cricket on Day 3 as they have a good amount of runs on board to challenge Railways charge to overhaul it for first-innings lead.

Brief scores: Jharkhand 417 in 135.4 overs (V Singh 128; Sangwan 5/94). Railways 19/1 in 7.

1 overs (Shekhar 1-6). Match to continue..
