Tervin Mdluli, an experienced safari guide in South Africa, had a front-row seat to the action as a rhino charged a herd of elephants. However, the ranger’s excitement turned into panic when the bull decided to turn around and run towards his vehicle. According to a Latest Sightings report, the incident occurred recently in Kruger National Park.
One of Africa’s largest game reserves, Kruger is a popular destination for safaris, which can feature any or all of the Big Five animals: lions, leopards, cape buffaloes, elephants and rhinos. Since it was a dry morning, Mdluli knew to head towards the waterholes that hadn’t dried up, and was able to find elephant footprints on the way. When the safari reached one of the sites, they found some elephants drinking, others bathing and still others on their way to the herd.
However, there was more to the sighting, Mdluli realised, as he noticed a rhino in the distance. “There was a big rhino bull making his way in the direction of the herd,” the ranger recalled. He explained: “Male rhinos are known to be territorial, and they also don’t have the best vision, so we kept our distance as usual.
But we were excited to see what was going to happen!” “This was a breeding herd of elephants, and there were no big bulls around. However, as it happened, the rhino was walking right toward the young males at the end of the herd. One of the elephants, maybe in his very early twenties, stood up to the challenge.
” By now, Mdluli’s safari was witnessing an epic standoff between two heavyweight pachydermic species. In situations like this, backing away can instantly alter the dynamics against you, and that’s what ended up happening when the elephant retreated. This gave the rhino, which was already punching above its weight, all the confidence it needed to charge.
Even as the elephants cleared the way in panic, it continued to advance. Footage from the sighting shows the rhino taking a moment to appreciate the dominance it had established, before it turns around and starts running towards the safari vehicle. Mdluli, who was seen thoroughly enjoying the standoff, instantly “regrets” as he realises the rhino has a new target.
Fortunately, they were at a safe distance from the all action, which bought them enough time to back away. Get Latest News Live on Times Now along with Breaking News and Top Headlines from Viral and around the world..
