JAIPUR: The Rajasthan BJP government has directed that the gates of government colleges in the state be painted saffron, with the aim of instilling positive energy in students. The Education Department has issued a statement emphasizing that the move is intended to create a welcoming environment for students, fostering a sense of positivity upon entering college. The department's statement further stressed that the initiative seeks to convey a good message about the environment and the quality of education in colleges.
This project is being rolled out in the first phase on an experimental basis, covering 20 colleges across 10 divisions. If successful, the initiative will be expanded to other institutions. The order mandates that the painting be completed within seven days and once finished, officials are required to send photographs of the newly painted gates to the Education Department for verification.
Authorities have argued that the saffron color promotes positive energy, aligning with the government's broader efforts to improve the overall atmosphere in educational institutions. However, the initiative has sparked strong opposition from the Congress party. The opposition has criticized the move, calling it a superficial measure while serious issues like vacancies in teaching staff and inadequate facilities remain unaddressed.
Vinod Jakhar, the state president of the National Students' Union of India, questioned the priorities of the government, saying, "Thousands of lecturer posts are vacant in the state and in some areas, there are no proper facilities or classrooms for students. In such a situation, what good is painting the gate?" He accused the government of using public funds to promote political agendas rather than addressing critical educational needs..
