Sebastian Kris and Hudson Young were both given fines of $1000 and $1800 respectively for careless high tackles, the latter of which resulted in the Raiders back-rower spending time in the sin bin at a crucial point in the match.
Being his second offence, Young copped a slightly dearer fine with an early plea than Kris. Seb Kris and Hudson Young were put on a report for high tackles. Picture Fox Sports The officiating calls in the game from referee Todd Smith, as well as delayed decisions from the Bunker on Thursday night at Canberra Stadium, left many pundits and fans scratching their heads - as well as Raiders coach Ricky Stuart.
The Raiders also had a Kaeo Weekes try in the 15th minute disallowed for obstruction after Matty Nicholson ran to the inside shoulder of Braydon Trindall and the pair made contact. When asked in the press conference if Stuart knew what a sin-bin offence or an obstruction was, the coach said: "No". "I don't know .
.. no, I'm confused," he said.
If it sounded like Stuart - a famously heart-on-the-sleeve coach unafraid to speak his mind about the game - was biting his tongue, he may well have been. This season the NRL ordered a crackdown on coaches speaking about decisions after games. NRL chief executive Andrew Abdo wrote to all clubs about the issue, claiming such commentary from coaches led to negative media scrutiny towards officials and could even impact the grassroots level.
Canberra Raiders stars escaped without a ban. Picture NRL The NRL also ended its weekly briefings where the league's head of football Graham Annesley would explain some of the refereeing decisions from the round. "We had every reason to lose that.
There was a lot of fight in them," Stuart said of his team after the win over Cronulla. "We had nothing. We had no field position.
I think the penalty count was 7-2. "Ok fine, if we're giving penalties away that's great, [but] you can't tell me other teams don't give away penalties as well. I hate talking.
.. and Toddy is a wonderful referee.
I'm not having a crack at him. He's a wonderful ref. I hope I'm allowed to give him a rap.
" The Raiders will enjoy nine days before they next play in Darwin against the Parramatta Eels.
